The best Australian tech deals

The weekend is great for shopping, and we don't mean just stocking up on groceries. It's a great time to upgrade your tech, too.

So get yourself a brand-new flagship phone from Apple or get fit with Fitbit's smart watch. If either of them aren't what you want or need, there's a convertible laptop that will save you money and help you get work done while on the move.

Those aren't the only gizmos you can lay your hands on, though. Remember to scroll down the page as there are plenty of deals from earlier in the week that are still hot.

So grab your wallet, get comfortable and take a gander at Friday's deals below.

New deals added Friday, August 11

Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2-in-1 laptop (from $1,124; usually from $1,499): If you’re someone who needs to get work done while on the move, consider getting the 13-inch 2-in-1 Dell Inspiron.There’s 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage available, not to mention about 25% off on the RRP. The model powered by an Intel Core i5 CPU is on sale for $1,124, but if you’d like a tad more grunt under the hood, the Intel Core i7 version is available for $1,273.99. That’s down from $1,499 and $1,698.99 respectively. This offer ends Thursday, August 17.

Apple iPhone 7 (from $879, usually from $1,079): There’s still over a month to go before Apple announces its next flagship handsets, but if you want to tote around the current iPhone, the 32GB iPhone 7 in Black, Rose Gold, Silver and Gold is available from Kogan for a sweet $879. That’s a saving of $200 on one of the best premium phones available in the market today. If 32GB isn’t sufficient storage, you do have the option of the 256GB model, available in Silver and Rose Gold only, for just $999. That’s a saving of $380.

Fitbit Blaze smart fitness watch ($198, usually $288): Fitbit has become a household name when it comes to fitness trackers, but this is the company’s first smartwatch. It does everything a great fitness tracker should and then some. It features a colour LCD display, up to five days of battery life and is compatible with most popular fitness apps. It usually retails for $288, but you can save $90 at JB Hi-Fi with the smart fitness watch being on sale for $198.

Beko CN151140DZX 505L bottom-mount fridge ($947, usually $1,447): Featuring Beko’s NeoFrost cooling technology and an odour filter to keep food fresh for longer, this massive 505L refrigerator with the freezer unit at the bottom will keep you family and guests well fed. The Beko fridge can also save you $500, so head to JB Hi-Fi and update your kitchen with a brand-new stainless steel-finish fridge.

Ministry of Sound L Plus Bluetooth speaker ($143.20; usually $525): It might look like a large toaster, but the L Plus wireless Bluetooth speaker from Ministry of Sound – one of the biggest names in audio tech – has great sound to match its big build. It’s not entirely portable, unless you’re willing to tote around a 2.5kg speaker everywhere you go, but the L Plus is great for setting up a multiroom system at home. It usually carries a price tag of about $525, but it’s been discounted down to $179 on Catch’s eBay store (formally Catch of the Day), but you can get an additional 20% off at checkout if you use the code PITCH. That brings the price of the L Plus speaker down to a sweet $143.20. This offer ends August 14.

Sports headphones sale (from $22.40): If you’re into fitness and love your daily runs or gym visits, you’ll be needing a workout buddy that won’t mind getting a bit of sweat on them. There’s a bunch of in-ear sports headphones available for less than their usual three-figure RRPs on Catch’s eBay store, including headphones from BlueAnt, Jabra and JBL. This offer expires August 14.

Samsung Galaxy S8 ($899; usually $1,199): If you’ve held off getting the latest Samsung flagship smartphone, you were wise to do so, as now you can save a cool $300 on what we consider to be an amazing handset. This 5.8-inch phone has a great display, plenty of grunt under the hood and a fabulous camera. It retails for $1,199, but you can get grey Galaxy S8 for $899 from Kogan. This is a direct import, however, not Aussie stock, so make the purchase if you’re comfortable with that.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar ($2039.20; usually $2,699): Thinner and with a bit more grunt under the hood than the previous models of the MacBook Pro, the 2016 laptops from Apple pack a punch. And the Touch Bar offers shortcuts to users that can be useful. The 13-inch MacBook Pros with Touch Bar and 256GB of storage retail for $2,699, but head over to Myer’s eBay store and nab one for $2,039.20 by adding the code PICKUP at checkout. That’s over 20% savings on the RRP. But this deal is available until August 14 or until stock runs out, so get a wriggle on!

  • Bose QuietComfort 25 noise-cancelling on-ear headphones ($329): With exemplary sound quality and equally excellent ambient noise cancellation, the QC25s will suit the serious or the casual listener, providing a wonderfully immersive experience when watching movies or TV shows, playing games or just listening to tunes. It also carries a premium price tag of $399, but get it from Apollo Hi-Fi for $329 and save $70.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge ($709): If you want a smartphone that has an edge over the others (yes, pun intended), then the Galaxy S7 Edge is still one heck of a phone, despite the market being flooded with Samsung’s latest flagship handsets. You don’t, however, have to pay full price for it. Vaya is offering this 32GB Android-toting smartphone for just $709, saving you $376 on the RRP of $1,099 when you buy it outright. So head on over to Vaya’s website and grab the phone the colour of your choice.
  • Sony X9000E 75-inch 4K HDR smart TV ($5,973): If you’ve got the space or the extra pocket change lying around, upgrade your home entertainment system by getting yourself this massive yet ultra-slim 75-inch Sony Bravia smart TV featuring 4K HDR picture quality, 4K UHD upscaling and Android OS. It’s internet-ready, so stream your favourite shows and movies via the native apps or a web browser. Plus you get to save a whopping $2,026 by purchasing it directly from Sony, where the TV is on sale and in stock for just $5,973, down from $7,999.

  • Sony XB950B1 Extra Bass Wireless Headphones ($148): If you love bass — we mean really love bass — then now’s a good time to swoop in on a pair of Sony’s Extra Bass cans with a dedicated Bass Effect button. Pump it up for 18 hours straight over Bluetooth or plug it in for passive listening. You can grab these Sony Wireless Headphones for a little under half price at JB Hi-Fi, reduced from $299 to $148.
  • Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2-in-1 (from $2,399): The X1 Yoga is a seriously premium 2-in-1 from Lenovo, with the portability, interactability and convenience of a tablet and the processing power and reliability of a laptop. You can get this 2-in-1 for $1,050 off the retail price at the Lenovo store, bringing it down to $2,549. But hurry, as this offer is available only until stocks last.
  • Google Pixel ($799): For a limited time, you can grab yourself the excellent Google Pixel flagship smartphone for only $799 at Jb Hi-Fi, knocking $280 off the retail. That’s a steal for what is an incredibly smart smartphon, packed with premium specs and a gorgeous display. Here it is in black, and here it is in silver. This offer ends August 9, so if you miss out on that, check out the prices at Kogan as they have had them for around $899 recently.

  • Google Pixel XL (from $999): If you’ve got larger hands or just want a larger phone, the 5.5-inch Google Pixel XL is a great choice for those who think the likes of Apple and Samsung are overrated. Like it’s smaller brother, the Pixel XL also has an excellent display, great specs and you can save $270 on the 32GB silver model by purchasing it from Kogan for just $999. That’s down from $1,269. If you’d like more storage space, the 128GB black Pixel XL is available for $1,149 – that’s a saving of $270 on the $1,419 RRP.
  • Google Daydream ($99): View the world from a different perspective without spending too much money. Google’s virtual reality headset has seen a price drop in the US, and although that’s not the case here, Aussies don’t need to miss out on that, thanks to Kogan. Take a trip into virtual reality worlds for just $99 with Google Daydream, which retails for $119 on the Google Store. And with the news that the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will soon be compatible with the Daydream, more people can expand their horizons. That’s good news all round. Keep in mind, however, that this is an imported model and not Australian stock.
  • Sony Xperia Z3 Compact tablet ($249): It isn’t brand-new, but the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact tablet does boast a pretty good battery life and offers PS4 Share Play. It’s a budget tablet that’s thin, light, has a vivid display and is dust- and waterproof to boot. The Xperia Z3 Compact tablet on sale on Sony’s website for $249, down from $499.

  • ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS gaming laptop ($2,799): If you missed the Microsoft Store sale on this 15.-6-inch monster of a machine a couple of weeks ago, don’t fret. Kogan has brought it back for a great price, with some cool specs – an Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of memory, a 156GB SSD plus a 1TB HDD (giving you heaps of storage) and, of course, a VR-ready 8GB Nvidia GeFroce GTX 1070 graphics card. The display has Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and it comes with an HD camera. Get the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS for $2,799 from Kogan and save $500 on this beast. And it’s Australian stock, too.
  • Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2-in-1 laptop ($999): If you’re someone who needs to get work done while on the move, consider getting the 13-inch 2-in-1 Dell Inspiron. It features a 7th-generation Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of memory and a 128GB SSD. It also features a Full HD LED backlit touch display with an infra-red camera. Get it from Dell and you can save $300 on this machine until August 3 – now available for just $999, bringing it into a sweet three-figure price point.
  • Beats Solo3 wireless on-ear headphones ($329): One of the most popular headphone brands, Beats has some of the best premium audio gear available on the market today. And the Solo3 has some excellent wireless stability, good phone interaction via Bluetooth and pretty decent sound quality. A set of the Solo3 retails for $399 apiece, but you can save $70 by heading to Kogan and getting a set for $329, available in eight different colours to match every personality.
